We Are One Retrospective – Offerings from Tribeca

It’s the Tribeca Film Festival’s turn. Their contribution to the We Are One Global Film Festival included the Tribeca 2020 Shorts Program, plus a conversation with Francis Ford Coppola. There were a lot of strong films among the Tribeca Shorts – my three favourites are covered below.

Egg (2020, USA, 11 min)

A man stuck in a dull conversation in a diner fixates on the journey of the egg to the table. It’s an action comedy romance western crime epic in a tiny package, I really loved this one!

The Light Side (2020, USA, 6 min)

A retired galactic dictator named Sith in contemporary New York tries to find a purpose in life. Short and sweet. Click here to watch it.

Circus Person (2020, USA, 17 min)

From writer/director/star Britt Lower. After Ava’s fiance leaves her for another woman, she attempts to move on by writing a love letter to the other woman while bringing herself to life again by joining a circus. Interestingly told, using various techniques to illustrate her inner journey, including animated body paint. Contains some non-prurient nudity.

Tribeca Talks: Francis Ford Coppola and Steven Soderbergh (2019, USA, 49 min)

Steven Soderbergh interviews Francis Ford Coppola about Apocalypse Now (1979). I didn’t think it was as interesting as the Cronenberg interview, it took a longer time to say less, but this may just be because I was familiar with stories about the film and didn’t learn much new here. But it did make me wonder whether Hearts of Darkness (1991) and Machete Maidens Unleashed! (2010) would make a good double, as they are two very different documentaries about making movies in the Philippines, movies with very different levels of prestige.
